Roswell Home Addition
MULTI-GENERATIONAL LIVING
This clever addition in the Westchester neighborhood of Roswell allowed for a young couple to plant roots alongside their parents, investing in a space that could grow with them for generations to come.
The project included a 1,600 square foot, two-story addition off the back of the house to create a secondary living suite for the young couple, equipped with two bedrooms, two full bathrooms, a kitchen, and a laundry room. The space was thoughtfully designed so that eventually mom and dad could age in place in the addition while kids and future grandkids expand in the main house.
The Vision
Young eager homebuyers were tired of getting outbid on the house of their dreams, which really wasn’t all that close to mom and dad. Rather than stretch their budget to live far away from work and family, they decided to invest in the family’s existing estate and build a home that would be comfortable for many generations to co-exist. The goal was to create a space that was it’s own, but still connected to the main house in such a way that the families could coexist when it was helpful. We set out to create a secondary living space that felt like it always belonged.
Design & Craft
The design evolved naturally to honor the scale and architecture of the existing home while thoughtfully accommodating the needs of its new homeowners. A functional yet whimsical kitchen anchors the first floor, opening seamlessly to a sun-drenched living area designed for everyday connection. A conveniently located laundry room and full bathroom featuring a repurposed dresser-turned-vanity allow the first floor to support aging in place well into the future. Perhaps the most innovative feature was the “cat tunnel” that allows the cats from both families to come and go between spaces as they please!
Upstairs, the second floor balances beauty and versatility. The luxurious primary bathroom – featuring a reclaimed vintage window, showstopping chandelier, and classic checkerboard marble tile – brings a sense of timeless elegance and quiet grandeur, while a flexible secondary space supports work-from-home needs and casual gaming with friends. The addition connects organically to the main house through a future nursery and the existing sunroom, creating a seamless transition that makes these spaces feel purposefully designed for shared living.
